LECTURE DESCRIPTIONS and SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES:

About Dr Hilary Clayton

Dr. Hilary Clayton is the McPhail Dressage Chair in Equine Sports Medicine, the first position of its kind in the world devoted entirely to the study of dressage horses, at the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine, and director of the new Center for Equine Performance there. She is the author of Conditioning Sport Horses and many articles and papers on equine biomechanics, as well as consulting editor to Hoofcare & Lameness, The Journal of Equine Foot Science.

Farriers and veterinarians attending Dr Clayton's lectures on Friday, February 25 at the American Farrier's Association Convention in nearby Ontario, CA will find the weekend program rewarding in opportunities for small-group interchanges with Dr Clayton, as well as the presence of upper-level horses for reference. However, Dr Clayton's weekend program is not specifically lameness-only, and will cover many facets of soundness and conditioning for the performing horse.

To learn more about Dr Clayton and her work with equine biomechanics, dressage movement and lameness, and conditioning physiology for all types of sport horses, visit her educational web site at http://www.cvm.msu.edu/dressage .

How to Assess Conformation and Movement (Saturday) - This talk addresses the relationship between conformation and movement in dressage horses. An objective method for assessing the angles of the bones and joints will be described and illustrated using photographic slides. The effect of variations in conformation on dressage performance will be evaluated, and conformational attributes that detrimental to dressage performances will be describe.

Conditioning for Soundness (Saturday) - Conditioning fulfills the dual objectives of maximizing performance and maintaining soundness. This talk will focus on conditioning techniques that are used to enhance soundness and will offer some advice about rehabilitating horses from specific injuries.

Dressage Gaits and Movements (Sunday) - The gaits and movements of dressage horses will be described based on analysis of world class competitors. The variations (collected, working, medium, extended) of the basic gaits will be described, together with piaffe, passage and pirouettes at walk and canter. The walk is illustrated by slides and video footage from the Olympics.

The Science of Bitting (Sunday) - The structure and function of the horse’s head are described in relation to the action of the bit and bridle. The talk is illustrated using slides and unique video footage recorded with the technology of fluoroscopy, which allows visualization of the position and movements of the bit within the horse’s oral cavity.

Dr. Andreas Klohnen, DVM, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Educated at Cornell University currently the Associate Veterinarian/Staff Surgeon at Chino Valley Equine Hospital, Chino, CA.

Minimally Invasive Surgeries (Sunday) - Dr. Klohnen will review the minimally invasive surgeries (arthrosopy, laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, upper airway surgery, etc.) that help determine what is wrong with a horse (chipped fractures, OCD lesions, ulcers, etc.). An excellent overview for horse owners. Presentation will include several slides.

Dr. Barrie Grant, DVM, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Educated at Washington State University, Residency at University of California, Davis, currently the Staff Veterinarian, Surgeon at San Luis Equine Hospital, Bonsall, CA.

Gait Abnormalities and Neuroligal Disease (Sunday) - Discussion of clinical signs, diagnostic methods and treatment of horses with cord compression, myelitis, EPM, and spinal arthritis. Learn some of the techniques for early detection that you can use.

Dr. Mark Rick, DVM, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Educated at Washington State University, Residency at University of California, Davis, currently the Staff Veterinarian, Surgeon at Alamo Pintado Equine Medical Center, Los Olivos, CA.

Treatment of Equine Joint Disease (Saturday) - With more information and therapies available than ever before, understanding and treating equine joint disease doesn’t need to be confusing. Dr. Rick will examine the options for treatment currently available and what’s on the horizon.

* All veterinarians were asked to pick their own subjects, based on what they were seeing and treating most often in dressage horses.*
