Natural Therapy for Laminitis: Is it all in the gut after all? Joyce Harman, DVM, MRCVS, is at the forefront of equine research, but with a mission of finding natural "alternatives," whenever possible, to medication-based treatments. In Hoofcare & Lameness #73, Harman looks at laminitis and shows you aspects of the disease that you have never considered before. Hitchhiking on the take-your-breath-away presentation by Hoofcare & Lameness consulting editor Chris Pollitt PhD at the 1999 AAEP Convention, Harman discusses the role of microflora in the gut, leaky gut conditions, the use of probiotics, and re-evaluates the use of certain medications in acute laminitis therapy. This is thought-provoking writing, of value to the entire horse industry. In encyclopedic style, Harman then suggests natural management and nutrition of the chronic or acute case, right down to special sands that eliminate bed sores, Chinese traditional medicines interpretation of Cushings syndrome, benefits of antioxidant therapy, and recommends when and if to shoe. Hoofcare & Lameness has never published an article like this; it is probably the first of its kind to be published, at least in the English language. This article will be referenced for years to come. Would you like to read more about natural therapy for laminitis and Dr. Harman's suggestions for management?
