H & L Online News Simon Curtis First Farrier Named Honorary Associate by British Veterinary Regulatory Body British farrier Simon Curtis FWCF has been awarded an Honorary Associateship by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (UK). This is the highest honor the College gives to a person outside the veterinary profession and it is awarded to persons of eminence or who have rendered special services to veterinary science or the veterinary profession. The award was announced at the RCVS Council Meeting on February 22, 2001 and will be presented on July 6. Simon Curtis is the first farrier to be given such a high honor. Simon has been a farrier in England's racing capital of Newmarket for 29 years and is the fourth generation of his family to shoe racehorses from the family's landmark forge at the head of the racing town's High Street. Simon is known for his pioneering work on medial and lateral extension shoes in foals as well as remedial shoeing for racehorses and breeding stock, and has trained many apprentices. He has frequently consulted to stud farms in the USA, Middle East, and India and lectured at events such as the Bluegrass Laminitis Symposium in Kentucky. He is the author of Farriery - Foal to Racehorse, published in 1999 and made significant contributions to the new Lifelearn CD-ROM, The Horse's Foot. Simon, along with his brothers Nick and Mark, apprenticed to his late father, a highly respected farrier in Newmarket, and also studied at The Animal Hospital in Helsingborg, Sweden. He became a Fellow of the Worshipful Company of Farriers by examination (FWCF) in 1990 and has written papers published in veterinary and farrier publications in Australia, the UK and the USA.. In 1988 Simon organized the first International Farriery and Lameness Seminar in Newmarket, England. The seminar was repeated in 1990, 1992 and 1994, attracting, at the last event, farriers and veterinarians from 17 countries around the world and featuring in each event some of the world's leading educators and practitioners. "HonAssocRCVS' is the RCVS official title for Simon's new honor.
