GOOD NEWS FROM SCOTLAND! Only four times in the past 700 years has anyone with the title of "supreme master" stood behind an anvil on our planet Earth. At a recent ceremony that has changed little since begun by King Edward II back in 1325, the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths (UK) presented only the fourth gold medal in its history, bestowing the title of Supreme Master of the craft on Edward Martin of Closeburn, Scotland! Edward is now 75 years old, and it would seem has been given every honor a farrier-or mere mortal-could receive. However, the WCB looked into its history and found that one special honor had not been granted in many years, and that no one was likely to be more qualified-or more deserving--than Edward. A few facts on Edward: Born in the tiny hamlet of Closeburn, Edward has been a farrier and blacksmith for more than 60 years. Now 75, he left school at a young age to learn the trade from his father and grandfather in their agricultural smithy, and went on to become a world champion competition farrier, only one of many honors. Edward carried his precious craft gently through the dark years of the mid- and late-20th century, until a renaissance in appreciation for traditional skills and artistry caused the world to literally beat a path to the door of his smithy. Edward and his sparkling wife Marion have received all comers graciously, with tremendous hospitality, in spite of language and cultural barriers that have melted quickly in the warmth of the forge and the home fireplace. Edward Martin is a man of the world; his life in the beautiful Scottish countryside only sounds quiet! He has turned his village into the epicenter of world farriery; it is the veritable crossroads of horse hooves and steel, and it is rarely quiet. It is charged as full of energy as any street corner in Manhattan or London, resounding with the energy of a man who has a lot to give and a long list of reason to rise each day.
Mr.Christopher Jeal, clerk of the WCB, stressed that the rare gold
medal was awarded as much for Edward's power of spreading the written
and spoken word as for his skill at the anvil. Edward was instrumental
in forming the World Farriers Association and is active today with
farrier groups and individuals; he has traveled to North America,
Australia, and Japan to share his knowledge and passion.
Hoofcare & Lameness is proud of a long and treasured relationship with Edward Martin, and carries Edward's name as a consulting editor. So many of the most memorable moments in the history of this publication were experienced in the presence of Mr. Edward Martin, and we have delighted in helping American farriers and horsemen become acquainted with this international treasure of a man. In recognition of Edward's latest-and most unusual-honor, we ask people to take a moment to put pen to paper and send Edward a note-or even a post card of where you live. Show him how far his influence has carried and tell him meaningful it has been for you to know-or just know of-this wonderful man. Please mail letters to Mr Edward Martin, Field's End, Closeburn by Thornhill, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Edward is currently recovering from knee replacement surgery and this is an especially good time for him to hear from his friends around the world. Edward doesn't have email, but you could send a message to his niece, Ms Ainslie Martin, and she will carry it down to the forge for Edward to read. Closeburn is that kind of place. Send email to ainslie_martin@hotmail.com. PLEASE VISIT OUR SPONSOR: St Croix Forge When I heard about the Gold Medal for Edward, the idea of sponsoring this edition of Hoofcare Online started with St Croix Forge and stopped there, too. St Croix Forge is one company in the farrier world that seeks a balance between the high technology of our times and an appreciation of the artistry that originally created horseshoes and all ironwork. The largest collection of Edward Martin's handiwork outside of Closeburn, Scotland resides in the St Croix Forge office/museum in Forest Lake, Minnesota; perhaps they have MORE of Edward's work than even he does. Each piece has a story and was acquired systematically at fundraising auctions for farrier groups around the world. A few years ago, I traveled to Closeburn to visit Edward with Clint and Jayne Carlson and their family; it was supposed to be their family vacation but we weren't there long before the forge was lit and we were living part of Edward Martin's day. No one blinked. You're invited to take a closer look at the St Croix Forge horseshoe and tool product line at their web site: http://www.stcroixforge.com. (It's okay to blink.)
