=======

1. Trade Show Trends:
This is the year of the new raceplate designs, as you will soon read, with wider plates coming from all corners of the globe. The goal is better coverage/protection, fewer sore heels and stinging soles. Watch Hoofcare & Lameness for reports on how the new shoes are functioning both for training and on race day. Good luck to all our advertisers involved, and thanks for trying to make a better plate.

2. Trade Show Prediction:
The trade show appears to be about shoes and nails and rasps and pads, but you'll see a lot of very high-tech power tools this year, too. If someone opened a playground with extension cords at the AFA convention, the grinders and sanders would spark all night. Just for fun, the AFA contests should offer a class for creative use of power-tools! Or at least belt-sander races!

3. Where's Hoofcare & Lameness Journal?
We should be easy to find at this convention, even though the trade show itself will take up TWO FLOORS. You can check in anytime at our lobby booth outside the main lecture/contest area at the bottom of the escalator for information.

Our main booth will be in the upper level trade show. This is where you can meet authors and speakers, hang out with our ³booth magnet² (and veteran farrier from Pennsylvania) Bob Skradzio Sr., and update or begin your subscription.

We'll also be displaying new products from some of our advertisers who couldn't make it to the show. We'll also be Media Central with videos, cd-roms, and hopefully a new DVD. Make us your home base!

4. Don't miss this lecture!
The educational program at this year's convention is excellent with lots of great speakers. For details about all the lectures, check the AFA's web site
http://www.americanfarriers.org/2004_convention/convention_schedule.asp We are recommending a ³DON'T MISS THIS² designation for the lecture on³ dynamic hind limb shoeing² by Haydn Price from Wales on Friday at 2:30 p.m. Haydn previewed this lecture at a conference with Dr Hilary Clayton in December, and this is good stuff. Lots of video, lots of ³real² horses, that you'll see video'd before and after shoeing! The idea for this lecture is looking at the hock and how it can be supported by reinforcing the foot, for work on both hard and soft ground. Using high-tech video analysis, Haydn can test minute changes in toe length and the effect of ³wing² lateral extensions for weak hocks. To quote Haydn: ³Farriery, as an industry, shoes horses statically [standing] not dynamically [moving]. I want to be proactive ‹ assessing the horses' locomotion and soundness rather than just reacting to a problem which has become apparent.² To learn more about Haydn and his work, visit this site for his advanced shoeing seminars in Wales: http://www.farriercentre.co.uk/html/home.html or the website about his video analysis and shoeing of British Equestrian Federation international dressage team horses: http://www.equinalysis.co.uk Haydn Price's work is featured in Hoofcare & Lameness #78.

=======NEWS FLASH!

GOOD NEWS: You Won't Be Alone...
Executive Director Bryan Quinsey reports that there are 540 pre-registrations plus another 150 spouses and guests. Many more registrations will be coming in and lots of people will also register on-site. The AFA has pre-sold 300 tickets to the banquet on Saturday night.

======================

5. Special Guest: Edward Martin
The AFA convention has a special guest this year, Mr Edward Martin FWCF MBE from Scotland. When we spoke to him last week, he was hesitant to name times, because he is worried about his health, but he insists that he will be the guest of honor at the Hoofcare & Lameness booth. Almost 80 years old, Mr Martin is a legendary farrier and gentleman who has influenced countless farriers all over the world. Come to our booth and you'll soon find out why. At the booth, take a look at a photo we found of Edward taken 50 years ago at a shoeing competition. Edward immediately recognized the fore-hammer he's swinging. He had borrowed it from his grandfather, who had purchased in 1893. Guess what: it's still being used today. We are thrilled that Edward will be in Rochester. He'll also be judging the first ever "old timers" shoeing contest. By the way, the AFA has added a special event to the schedule: on Friday evening, February 27th, there will be a FREE reception (cash bar) in Edward's honor at 6 pm.

***************SPONSOR MESSAGE***************

THIS EDITION OF HOOFCARE ONLINE IS SPONSORED BY...CROSSAPOL: The SERIOUS Hoof Treatment

Crossapol is a funny name for a serious product that will soon be in great demand, particularly here in the Northeast, where a severe winter means a tough transition ahead for horses' hooves. Excess moisture in the hoof can weaken walls and make feet "funky" in a few weeks; farriers complain that there's no place to put a nail. The result? Sprung clinches, lost shoes, panicked owners, exasperated farriers, and lots of finger-pointing, when it's really the environment that's to blame. Enter Crossapol, developed by Virginia farrier Paul Goodness. Losing a shoe is just not an option for Paul's international competitor clients and his determination sent him to the lab to mix a hoof hardener to do the job. Crossapol is not a cosmetic hoof dressing; it is a true hoof hardener. Crossapol is distributed internationally by Delta Horseshoe Company(http://www.deltahorsecare.com).

It can be ordered from Hoofcare & Lameness advertisers Harry Patton Horseshoe Supplies, Ken Davis and Sons, Meader Supply, and probably many others.

To learn more about Crossapol, visit http://www.crossapol.com or stop by the Delta Horseshoe Company booth at the AFA convention trade show.

9. AND JUST FOR FUN...
Everyone in the horse world is still chuckling over the latest (and for many the GREATEST) commercial broadcast on the 2004 Super Bowl. "Clydesdale Born a Donkey" won our hearts when the donkey sported "hair extensions" to make up for a lack of feathers on his legs. In case you missed it, or in case you want to watch it again and again, the commercial (and, yes, the sleigh ride one too) can be viewed online at www.budweiser.com. You must be 18 years old to enter the site. The commercials are listed in the middle "features" box. Click on the one you want to see.

Note: If you know anything about driving and hitches, you'll catch a few interesting harness details in the final scene, when the donkey joins the hitch, if you play it in slow motion.
